The team

You’ll work directly with the people responsible for your project from the start.

Matt Hughes

Technical Director

Matt is Technical Director at D2 and a founding member of the practice. His focus sits on the technical side of architecture, turning design ideas into clear construction information that contractors can price and build with confidence.

He trained at NCE Birmingham while working at Denbighshire County Council Design Services, progressing from Architectural Technician to Senior Technician before moving into private practice. His experience includes major commercial schemes such as student accommodation at Bangor University, the Future Schools programme in North Wales and the Sports Pavilion at Eirias Park.

At D2, Matt leads technical design and oversees projects through construction. Outside work he enjoys running, the gym and still DJs at events whenever he can.

Adam Lloyd

Architect & Director

Adam is a Director at D2 and a founding member of the practice. He studied at the University of Birmingham, qualifying while working in practice and gaining experience across a wide range of project types and stages. He was drawn to architecture by the impact buildings have on everyday life – how light, material and form shape how people feel, use space and interact with others.

At D2, he is involved throughout the process, from early design through to construction, working closely with clients to understand the full potential of each project and guide it through planning and delivery.

Adam enjoys the problem-solving that comes with each project, using site conditions, budget and client aspirations to shape solutions that feel both natural and deliberate. Outside work, he enjoys spending time with his family, restoring old Land Rovers and renovating his home. He’s also a keen footballer at heart, despite being long retired from the pitch.

Luke Jones

Architect & Associate Director

Luke is an Architect and Associate Director at D2 and has been with the practice since 2017. He studied architecture at the University of Central Lancashire before completing his Master’s at the University of Liverpool.

He leads the early stages of many projects, meeting clients, understanding what they’re trying to achieve and shaping design proposals that respond to both the site and the people who’ll use the building. He believes honest advice is central to good projects, particularly when difficult decisions need to be made early.

Luke enjoys getting to know clients and tailoring each project to suit them. For him, seeing someone’s reaction when a design first clicks into place is one of the best parts of the job. Outside work, he enjoys squash, motorsport and exploring the outdoors with his partner, daughter and dog.

Kevin Lawton

Senior Architectural Technician

Kevin is a Senior Architectural Technician at D2 and has been with the practice since 2020. With more than twenty years’ experience in architecture, he focuses on the technical side of projects, developing designs into coordinated construction information and guiding schemes through Building Regulations.

Before joining D2, Kevin spent two decades at a Chester-based practice working across a wide range of sectors, including projects at Chester Zoo and numerous housing schemes, from small developments to one-off homes.

At D2 he coordinates consultants, prepares detailed construction drawings and, where required, acts as Principal Designer under the Building Regulations. He has a particular interest in modern construction methods and integrating renewable technologies into new build homes.

Tom Smith

Architect

Tom first joined D2 in 2018 after completing his undergraduate degree, returning to the practice in 2021 after finishing his Master’s at Liverpool John Moores University. He qualified as an architect in 2024 and now works across projects from early concept design through to construction.

He was originally drawn to architecture through an early interest in model making and design. At D2, Tom enjoys developing ideas at concept stage and seeing how those decisions translate into the finished building.

He believes clients value good design presented clearly, along with honest advice and straightforward communication as projects progress. Outside work, Tom enjoys football, padel and live music, and will happily travel for a good gig.
