A careful reworking of a familiar landmark
Our work at The Old Chester Post Office set out to do two things: retain the character that makes the building so recognisable and give it a clear new role as a contemporary workplace.
On the street frontage, we undertook a sensitive restoration of the original elevation, repairing and enhancing existing fabric so that the building’s presence on the high street feels composed and complete once again. Historic reference material, including text from the Cheshire Observer dated 20 May 1876, informed the design of the entrance sequence, helping ensure the new approach feels connected to the building’s original character.

To the side, a dated extension was removed and replaced with a lightweight, contemporary walkway that provides step-free access and a clearer relationship between old and new. By removing the concrete ramp and creating a level threshold side entrance, we were also able to reinstate the original lightwells and basement windows, bringing daylight back into spaces that had gradually been closed off over time.
Internally, the plan has been reconfigured as an open, flexible office environment, with a mix of open-plan workspace, meeting rooms, kitchens, an auditorium and a bar. The layout is designed to be easy to navigate, with good natural light and clear sightlines to support collaboration and informal interaction. New insertions sit alongside retained historic features, so that the building’s age and character remain visible while it functions as a modern commercial space.
Overall, the project focuses on clear detailing and long-term usability, rather than spectacle. It shows how a familiar building can be adapted for present-day needs while still feeling unmistakably like itself.

The Cheshire West Design Awards
The Cheshire West Design Awards exist to highlight projects that make the borough a better place to live, work and visit. The judges focus on high quality contemporary design and construction, the use of traditional materials and craft skills to conserve heritage, and innovative approaches to energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. Being recognised in this context is therefore about much more than appearance. It reflects how a project respects its setting and how it will continue to serve its purpose over time.
Awards of this kind highlight the impact that well-considered design can have on communities, businesses and the wider built environment.
Samantha Dixon MP for Chester North and Neston said in her closing speech;
“The role of skilled designers, architects and built-environment professionals is vital. We are incredibly fortunate to have such talent here in our region, collaborating and working together. Tonight’s award winners embody the very best of this dedication. They show that design in Cheshire West and Cheshire can be inspiring, practical, sustainable, and rooted in the distinct character of our communities. We are all winners when great design is evident, as it is here tonight.”
Recognising the people behind the project
A huge thank you to everyone involved in bringing The Old Post Office to life, and to the Cheshire West Design Awards for recognising the value of careful, heritage-aware commercial design. We’re proud to see this project celebrated and we look forward to continuing to contribute to the built environment across Cheshire, North Wales and the Wirral.
